Mrs. Barbara Thomas Reid, 83, of Walterboro, entered into rest Monday afternoon, July 22, 2019, at the Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston. She was the loving wife of the late Mr. Samuel Creevy “Sam” Reid.
Born October 24, 1935, in Jacksonville, Florida, she was a daughter of the late Marty Simmons and the late Jessie Viola Thomas Simmons. She was a longtime educator with the Charleston County School District having taught Special Education and retiring from James B. Edwards Elementary School. Education was her life and she held close to her heart her work and the students whom she dearly loved. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At the Walterboro Branch of the church, she served in the Primary as well as many callings in the Relief Society – serving as a President on many occasions, Councilor, and Compassionate Service Leader. She will always be remembered as sweet and gentle lady who loved everyone and was also a great Southern Cook.
Surviving are: a brother, Benjamin Simmons of Ocala, Florida and a host of loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, who was the apple of her eye, Rebecca Converse Reid; and by siblings, Thomas Simmons, Cyril Simmons, Louise Simmons Spell, Ben Thomas, Myrtis Thomas Summey, Dean Thomas Strickland, Bill Thomas and Wheeler Thomas.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Friday morning, July 26, 2019, from the Walterboro Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1035 Dandridge Road, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.
