Thomas Henry "Scooter" Murray, III Obituary

Mr. Thomas Henry Murray, III, known by all as “Scooter Murray”, age 69, of the Chessey Creek Community near Walterboro, entered into rest eternal Saturday morning, January 9, 2021, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.   He was the husband of forty-two years to the late Mrs. Audrey Nugent Murray who preceded him in death on February 13, 2020.

Born August 23, 1951, in Walterboro, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Dr. Thomas Henry Murray, Jr. and the late Annie Lesene Murray.   Scooter was a man who knew a strong work ethic and was always in the mists of something.   He started the first Radio Shack in Walterboro and also served as a licensed General Contractor with Preferred Properties, LLC. He served alongside his wife in many of her business ventures and was serving as current day Chief Executive Officer for Murray Enterprises.

He was a lifelong member of Saint Jude’s Church in Walterboro.  He was a life member of the National Rifle Association of America and served as Vice-Chairman of the Colleton County Friends of the National Rifle Association Annual Banquet.  He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks – Walterboro Lodge No. 1988, was a member of the Walterboro Jaycees, and was a member and Past President of the Walterboro Rotary.  Throughout the years, he has served and participated in countless committees and civic organizations as he deeply cared about his community and fellow Colletonians.

There was not much that Scooter has not attempted or been a part of in his lifetime.  He once was a boat captain operating a shrimp boat with the Baldwin family at Bennett’s Point.  He could build and do anything.  He enjoyed being a family man and living life on the Ashepoo River.  However, possibly the greatest accomplishment in his life was the love he possessed and the devotion he gave to his late wife, the light and love of his life.

Surviving are: his four children, John Richard Murray, Shawn Todd “Shawny” Murray and his wife Meagan, Thomas Henry Murray, IV and his wife Heather, and Stacie Murray Clark and her husband Jeff all of Walterboro; one he loved as a daughter, Pam Porter; and two sisters, Linda Murray Hoover and her husband Jonathan of Walterboro and Annette Murray Baldwin and her husband Richard of Bennett’s Point.  There are nine grandchildren, Ashten (Cody), Lexie, Jillian, Ava, Kinslee, Hannah, Karsyn, Thomas, Alex, and Briana; and three great grandchildren, Annalee, Paige, and Aubrey; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the following:  Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospitals,  262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105; or to, Shriners Hospitals for Children,  2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607.

Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon, Wednesday, January 13, 2021, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.   The family will greet guests following the funeral ceremony at the funeral home.    The service will be livestreamed from The Brice Herndon Facebook page and website.

Following the funeral at 5 o’clock that afternoon, an outdoor reception will be held at his beloved home on the Ashepoo River for all to come share in fellowship with the family.
