Sergeant Edward John Marcurella Obituary

Detective Sergeant Edward John Marcurella, Jr., 55, of Walterboro, a longtime friend and law enforcement officer with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, entered into rest Saturday evening, January 16, 2021, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro following a short and strong-willed battle against the Coronavirus.

Born August 31, 1965 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, he was a son of Edward John Marcurella, Sr. and Judith Ann Morris Marcurella.    Ed enlisted in the United States Army in 1983 and following his basic training served until 1987 with the Army National Guard.  After that time, he made the Lowcountry of South Carolina his home.   He was of the Roman Catholic Faith.

Sergeant Marcurella possessed a selflessness, integrity, and dedication to serve and protect his beloved community.   He served with Hilton Head Fire Rescue, having been a fireman for seventeen years and paramedic for eight years.    He then served with the Ridgeland Police Department prior to establishing his career in Walterboro.  In addition to being a detective with Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Marcurella was a member and Co-Chairman of the Lowcountry Human Trafficking Task Force for the Fourteenth District and was also an investigator for the Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children.   His awards, service, and accolades are extensive.  He was a bomb specialist, and member of both the prestigious group known as the Special Weapons and Tactics Team and the Special Response Team.    He made his work his life, but outside of this great devotion, he enjoyed the outdoors and hunting the American Whitetail Deer.

Surviving in addition to his parents of Beaufort are his wife, Mrs. Christy Ferrell Marcurella; seven children, Angela Blake, Steven Edward Marcurella (Missy), Brandi White, Tiffany Marcurella, Hunter Joseph Marcurella, Lauren Amanda McMillan, and Ethan Chad McMillan; three brothers, Roger Marcurella, Dean Marcurella, and Grant Marcurella; and a sister, Ina Rollins; as well as nine grandchildren.   He is also survived by Christy’s family, her parents, Denny and Elizabeth Ferrell and her Grandmother, Carolyn Godley Ferrell.  There is a host, to numerous to count, that loved Ed as their own, many he knew professionally and many he knew outside the bounds of his work, to include a dear friend, Amanda Campbell.   He was preceded in death by his faithful K9 companion, “Panzer” who ended his watch on March 27, 2015.

The Relatives and Friends of Sergeant Edward John Marcurella, Jr., are invited to attend his funeral services which will be conducted 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, January 23, 2021, from the campus of the Colleton County High School, 150 Cougar Nation Drive, Walterboro.   The Reverend Dr. Zane Brown officiating.   Honors will be conferred by the United States Army and Law Enforcement.
