Shonda "Soona" Strickland

Shonda "Soona" Strickland, 50, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Friday, April 19, 2024.

Born November 1, 1973, in Colleton County, she was the daughter of Deborah Benton and the late Earl Wayne Hicks, Sr. Shonda was known by her grandchildren as “Na-Na”, she was a loving grandmother who gave each of her grandchildren a special nickname. Full of love, tattoos, sarcasm, and the art of chit-chatting, she loved to travel and explore caves, visit waterfalls and always enjoyed going to the mountains. During her various trips she would collect crystals and stones along the way. One of her favorite pastimes would be sitting in a rocking chair or swing, just enjoying her surroundings and weather for hours. Shonda was especially fond of New Orleans, one of her favorite vacations she ever took was full of sightseeing, and listening to street performers play jazz while she explored. She loved to read, and was incredibly book smart with quick wit. Even though she was a fan of horror movies and was known to be “a little witchy”, she always used her sense of humor to get a giggle out of anyone around her.

Surviving are: Her mother Deborah, and her spouse Wendell "Paz" Lyons of Walterboro, two daughters; Niki Hixon and her husband Christian of Walterboro, Holly Hiers and her husband Aaron of Walterboro; a brother; Aaron Benton of Walterboro, a sister; Jennifer Moore and her husband Scottie of Walterboro; her grandchildren, Justin, Jaiden, Rylin, and Kaylee; along with numerous loving family members.

In addition to her father, preceding Shonda in death is her husband, Jimmy Strickland; and a brother, Wayne Hicks, Jr.
