Marshall Givens

September 27, 1936 ~ October 8, 2015 (age 79) 79 Years Old

Mr. Marshall Givens, 78, surrendered his gallant fight with cancer, Thursday morning, October 8th, 2015, surrounded by his loving family at his son’s home at Sniders.

 

Funeral services will be held   11 o’clock Saturday morning, October 10, 2015, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 16147 Lowcountry Highway, Ruffin, South Carolina.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

 

Mr. Givens was born on September 27, 1936, in the very house he passed away in, this past Thursday. He was the son of the late Lee Givens and the late Florence Crosby Givens. He was a dedicated life-long member of Bethel United Methodist Church on Lowcountry Hwy. He was retired from Westinghouse of Hampton, South Carolina, after a thirty-seven year career as a machinist and boiler house technician.  He also served as a member of the National Guard Reserve for eight years.  Mr. Givens was an avid gardener and farmer, and raised cattle for many years. Mr. Givens was known in the community, and with relatives, as a very kind, patient man. He was very devoted to his family.

 

Surviving are: his beloved wife of almost eleven years, Mrs. Helen Breland Givens, whom he says he “caught on the church steps”; one son, Mark (Alice) Givens of Sniders; seven step-daughters, Suzanne (Coy) Kinard of Aiken, Patsy Thomas of Atlanta, GA, Jenny (David) Gabrielli of Summerville, Laura Ann (Jim) Parler, Tracy Breland, Diane Dinehart, and Chris Gooding, all of Walterboro; one other daughter-in-law, Maija Givens of Lodge. There are five grandchildren that survive, Marsha (Scott), Aaron (Jen), Dianna (Blake), Callah (James) Denise (Wade); and nine step-grands, Brittany (James), Brian (Allison), Mandy (Drew), Joli, Gene (Catherine), Brian (Sabrina), Emily, Henry, Allison.  Also surviving are six great grands, Brianna, Jayla, CJ, Everett, Charlie, Adalyn; and thirteen step-great grands, Emily, Katlyn, Ally, Breland, Anthony, David, Shaun, Edward, Mary Catherine, Timothy, Desmond, Aaliy, and Dewey.  There are also many nieces, nephews and cousins that survive, as well as a very special cousin, Mae Givens Smoak, whom he loved as a sister.

 

Mr. Givens was preceded in death by; one son, Toby Givens, his previous wife of seventeen years, Betty Connelly Givens, three sisters, Elise Givens Tripp, Ruth Givens Hudson and Pearl Givens Lyons and two brothers, Marion and Merrill Givens.

 

Many thanks go to those that helped out during Marshall’s time of need; the caregivers of Amedisys Hospice Services, Roper/St. Francis Hospital, Bethel United Methodist Church on Lowcountry Highway and all the family, friends and community.
