Henry Alex Cummings

Mr. Henry Alex Cummings, age 82, died peacefully at his home in Ruffin surrounded by his loving family.

 

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Saturday morning, May 30, 2015, from the graveside at Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2201 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.

 

The family will receive friends after 3 o’clock Friday afternoon at the residence, 21956 Lowcountry Highway, Ruffin.

 

Born October 23, 1932, a native of Ruffin, South Carolina, he was a son of the late J.F. Cummings and the late Maline Carter Cummings.  Henry was the youngest graduate of Carlisle Military Academy in Bamberg, South Carolina, having graduated in 1948 at the age of 16.  He graduated Draugns Business School in Columbia, South Carolina prior to entering Furman University where he met his wife, Ann and they were married two years later in 1952.  He had a wonderful career in Ruffin, South Carolina from 1952 until 2006, where he was the owner and operator of Cummings Bros. Gin, was the founder and operator of Southern Grain Storage and Henry A. Cummings and Sons, an agribusiness construction company for grain bins.  Henry was a Christian who during his lifetime attended and supported the churches in his community and county and will always be remembered for his life full of giving.

 

Surviving are: his loving wife of sixty-two years, Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Crehore Cummings; three children, Suzanne Cummings Martin and her husband Allen of Ruffin, H. A. “Sonny” Cummings, Jr. and his wife Mindy of Ruffin, W. J. “Skip” Cummings and his wife Roxane of Cope; and a sister, Anne Cummings Padgett, of Denver, North Carolina.  There are eight grandchildren, Bonnie Sade, Richard Sheffield, II (Robin), Robert Cummings (Lindsy), Jeanna Cummings, Andrea Michel (Rick), AllynAnne Terry (Al), Riley Cummings (Tara) and Kristyn Cummings; fifteen great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Laurine Cummings of Hampton as well as several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Cummings and Frank Cummings, Jr.
