Mr. Douglas David Smith, 54, of Edisto Beach, passed away Friday, August 4, 2017. 

 

A memorial service will be held at 6 o’clock, Thursday evening, August 10, 2017, at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  The family will receive friends following the service.

 

Born September 13, 1962 in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and was the son of David Fraye Smith and Margaret Ann Kimm Ryan. Mr. Smith served his country for six years in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Bowen.  He received his Bachelors of Science Degree from Troy University and retired after 28 years from the Savannah River Site where he worked in vulnerability assessment.  

 

Mr. Smith was a member of American Legion Post #0093, President of the Driftwood II Homeowners’ Association at Edisto Beach, and was a member of North Augusta Baptist Church.  He was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos and NASCAR Racing, loved camping, and especially loved his therapy dog, “Jack”.  He was a friend to many who believed in helping others in any way possible, and was incredibly patriotic and proud to have served his country.

 

Surviving are: his wife of 31 years, Sheron Hiers Smith of Edisto Beach; mother and step-father, Margaret and Ronald Ryan of Lakewood, Colorado; step-son, Shannon Cook and his wife Ashleigh of Walterboro; granddaughters, Teddi Cook and Alexandria Cook, both of Walterboro; sister, Sheryl Golos and her husband Earl of Arvada, Colorado, and their sons, Kyle Golos and his wife Lara and their son, JAG of Kansas, and Adam Golos of Colorado; brother, Matthew Wayne of Commerce City, Colorado, and his daughter, Madeline Wayne of Colorado; step-sister, Veronica McDaniel and her husband Sam of Lakewood, Colorado; and a special friend, Bob Redfearn of Edisto Beach.
