Mr. Dean Kenneth Nelson, 68, of Cottageville, entered into eternal rest Thursday, August 27, 2015 at the Life Care Center of Charleston.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 5 pm, Monday, August 31, 2015 at Cottageville United Methodist Church, Cottageville.  The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service.

Mr. Nelson was born June 27, 1947 in Galesburg, Illinois and was a son of the late George R. Nelson and Leitha Burkett Nelson.  He was a retired Media Specialist from the Beaufort County School System and was the first police chief for the Town of Cottageville in the 1970’s.  Mr. Nelson served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of Cottageville United Methodist Church.  He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a former Boy Scout Leader and former Red Cross Instructor for First Aid and Water Safety.

Surviving are: his wife, Catherine Spurr Nelson of Cottageville; children, Kristie Barton and her husband James of Summerville; Kimberlie Hutson and her husband John of Walterboro; Dean Gabriel Nelson and his wife Erin of Cottageville, and Sarah Poirier and her husband Derrick of Cottageville; and grandchildren, Alexander, Abigail, Andrew, Taylor, John Allen, Caroline, Joshua, Matthew, Jackson, Michael, Keenan, Jordan, and Kaitlynn.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorials be made to: Keepers of the Word, c/o Paul and Renee Carden, 3067 Sniders Highway, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
