Born January 5, 1930, in Toccoa, Georgia, he was a son of the late Robert Riley Garland and the late Ruby Holcomb Garland.  He served our country faithfully beginning in the Army Air Corps prior to enlisting with the United States Air Force where he worked until his retirement as a Technical Sergeant.  He was a World War II veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. Following his military retirement, he began a career in supply work retiring first from the private sector and lastly in a civil service capacity.  Many who knew him had seen him first while he was walking. He walked for an hour every day and attributed his excellent health to this routine.  He was also an avid reader, and was regularly seen at the Colleton County Library. He was a strong, funny, sensitive, and wise husband, father, grandparent, and friend. He was not a joiner of organizations; he was a solitary, family man.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Bobbie Ann Graham, and a grandson, Derrick Garland. Survived by sisters, Lily Graham, Lake City, FL; Johnnie Perry, Gainesville, Ga; Billie Murray, Hartwell, GA; Glenda Anderson-Leonard, Vidalia, GA; and Robin Garland Brown, Toccoa, GA; by brothers, Leonard (Carol) Garland, Wichita Falls, TX, and Robert R. Garland (Katie), Westminster, SC.,  three children, Randall Garland and his wife Katie of Cocoa, Florida; Vickie Garland Malone and her husband Jerry of Summit, Mississippi; and Scott Gregory Garland and his wife Son of Lake Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Tony) Balatbat, Randy, Jr., Collin, Chad, Garland, and, Joshua, Alana, and Caleb Malone.  He also had four great granddaughters, Annie, Brianna, Megan, and Dalanie Balatbat.  He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Paul Anderson Youth Home, Post Office Box 525, Vidalia, Georgia 30475.
